can't be cleaned
Yes, this fan is fairly quiet and it does do everything a fan should do. It is a little pricey, but I thought the reputation of "quiet and effecient" would be worth it. I simply cannot clean it. It came with my husband and has never been cleaned, it needs a good cleaning. There was so much crusty dust on there, I thought I would just have a go at it one morning and then I could literally rest in peace. I struggled. I have had other fans in my life, they all accumulate dust, but this one needs an entire tool boxto open up. Even with that, I never did get it apart.
I therefore cannot recommend, ESPECIALLY in households with allergies.

amazing product
This product is amazing on a hot day- definitely gets the air circulating. I love using this product before it gets too hot, when using the AC would be too much and using nothing would be too hot.

Quiet with good air throw
I'm fairly happy with my Vornado 723B. At the lowest speed setting, it's pretty quiet (whisper / soft voice) but still throws a decent amount of air. At the highest speed, it throws a lot of air for a good distance, yet is still only moderately noisy. I definitely like that I can turn it down for low-noise without having to turn it off entirely.

Directs strong column of air, but pricey
I'll start by saying that I'm a repeat-buyer of Vornado fans, and I think they're worth the extra money. With one exception, all of my Vornado fans have been of high quality, and produce at least as much air as any other fan that produces the same amount of noise. (My benchmark, since I hate loud fans.)
The fan has three settings. The lowest setting is good for very quiet, but fairly good, air. Most fans' lowest setting is unuseable, but I did find use for the lowest setting with this fan. However, you are probably looking at this fan in order to produce a large quantity of air, so the medium and high settings are what you'll use the most.
High speed does produce a bit of noise, but in my opinion it's quiter than any other fan I've tested that produces as much air as it does. The main benefit to the high speed setting is that it outputs a tremendous quantity of air in a very tight column. It is amazing how you can direct the air to a specific spot. In my case this is what I wanted -- the ability to target an exact point at which to shoot the air.
The fan feels solid, and seems to be built to last a long time. That would be consistent with my other Vornado purchases, which have all lasted several years with no problems.
I was initially worried about the look of the bent tube "leg" (stand), but in person it looks fine, and you don't really notice it like you do against the white background in the photo.
