Editorial Product Review:Item Description:Soy Gel is a safe industrial strength and consumer friendly paint, varnish, and urethane remover made with 100% American grown soybeans. It is non-flammable, non-caustic, nearly odorless and is effective on wood, concrete, stone, brick and metal surfaces. The low evaporation rate of SoyGel and its gel formulation make it possible to remove several layers of paint in one application. During the removal of lead based paint, lead becomes encapsulated in the gel, preventing airborne lead particles, allowing for safe and easy disposal. SoyGel does not discolor nor raise the grain of wood. The gel formula also allows for use on vertical and horizontal surfaces. SoyGel contains no methylene chloride, is not an alkaline based stripper and cleans up easily with water. Unlike more traditional paint strippers SoyGel lets you work without the odor. Indoors or outdoors, you can be guaranteed a safe restoration process with SoyGel.

unimpressed
It doesn't seem to work that well. I have smooth brick which had 2 coats of latex paint. I've gone through 2 thick coats of soy gel. Some of the paint is gone, but there is a stubborn, thin layer of goo left. Really, sanding is faster, easier to clean up after, and won't smell up your house for days.

It actually works (without a foul smell!)
I was skeptical, but now I'm loving this stuff. We ordered a small container to see if SoyGel was as effective as advertised...and then returned to order the larger size.

safe and effective
I bought a quart of this product to make sure it worked before ordering a gallon, as it is not cheap. But if you are unwilling to use toxic strippers, as I am, then it is worth every penny. It is beautifully effective on wood, and the Franmar website states it is safe for plaster. As my husband and I are stripping many layers of (probably) lead-based paint off old lumpy rough plaster, we would never have accomplished the task without this stripper.
I have found it is most effective to use a relatively thin layer of gel (even on thick layers of paint) and wait at least one day, maybe two (not covered with plastic film) until the surface is no longer gooey or wet. The paint is now very pliable but dryish and will peel away from the underlying surface in nice strips

like magic!
I can't recommend this stuff highly enough. Goop it on, let it sit for an hour or two, and the paint just wipes away. Fantastic!
