The Surge Extra-Large Multitool from Leatherman

The Leatherman Surge multitool is built with tough new pliers, longer blades and easy-to-use locks. This multitool features a helpful blade exchanger with the saw and diamond/wood file blades -- and with this blade exchanger, two knives and the extra-strong scissors are easily accessed from the outside of the tool. Also, there are four outside-opening blades to give you quick access to the tools you use most. The Surge boasts both large and small bit drivers, and it comes in a leather sheath. With stronger jaws for more squeezing force with less effort, plus Leatherman's strongest scissors yet, Surge is sure to make a splash at the work site.

Key Tech Specs:
  • 100-percent stainless steel construction
  • Includes Phillips #1-2, screwdriver 3/16-inch bits
  • Includes Phillips and flat tip eyeglasses bits
  • 4-1/2 inches long (closed)

Key User Features

The Surge features four blades that can be opened while the tool is closed. Open the straight and serrated knife blades with one hand by placing your thumb at the base of the blade and rotating the knife until it's fully extended, which securely engages the locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is marked with a padlock symbol on the tool, and to disengage it, just squeeze it towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock. It's a simple feature, but it's one that guarantees your safety.

To open and close the interior blades, just grip the handles and swing them open. Each interior blade can be lifted out by using the nail nicks or the thumb lifts. And if you wish to change blades, simply remove the saw or blade file from the blade exchanger by opening the exchanger to a 90-degree angle from the closed handles. The blade releases from a t-shank connector at the clasp. Changing tool bits is equally easy. Just open the bit driver, grasp the tool bit, and pull it straight out -- then snap the desired bit into place.

The Surge is a multitool powerhouse with tough new pliers, longer blades, and easy-to-use locks.

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality

In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Leatherman legend continues to improve!
This larger Leatherman tool is the best yet! I've been using a Leatherman tool since the inception, and "won't leave home without one"! I'm pleased!

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Leatherman Surge
I have had two previous products made by Leatherman, both of which gave me good service. I am pleased with the variety of tools that are on this model and really like the replaceable blade/file idea. I broke the file off from my last model.

I had the new tool for two days when I used it to twist some fencing wire. One side of the pliers snapped off almost immediately. I sent the unit back using the warranty process and it arrived back fixed within two weeks. Apparently the pliers don't handle a sideways torque too well so I will be more careful in the future. It has held up well when cutting wire since then; I don't think I'll try twisting it again any time soon.

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - rust??
Its perfect, except for the fact that since the first time it got wet it has rust spots all around

Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent Product - Everything in One
This product is terrific - it has all that you will ever need in a multi tool.

If you think that it is a little too bulky, you may be right, but it is perfect for me.

On paper, the Mio DigiWalker P550 looks to be an attractive gadget for the mobile professional, combining the capabilities of a PDA and GPS into one device. However, its poor battery life and subpar navigation skills tell a different story.

Though it won't appeal to the masses quite yet, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a nice, portable device for on-the-go Web browsing, and it has some worthy upgrades.

Though it has a few design and performance glitches, the Sony Ericsson W300i is a quality, basic MP3 cell phone.

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.

But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.

Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."
