Buyer Reviews

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Gilmour reel mower
The mower was delivered on time. Worked out of box.Minor assembly. Found this product to be what I expected.

Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Go for it
I purchased this in May and have used it as my main mower for a 10,000 sq. ft. lawn. Assembly was easy and I used it right away without adjustments. For background, although somewhat flat, my lawn is not even. Although surrounded by trees, I do not make pre-mowing inspections of the lawn for twigs, etc. and have not had any jamming issues. I find pushing the mower as easy as my gasoline mower, although you can not stroll with it. It does a close enough job to the gas mower not to worry about it. I do overlap my rows. I have had no problems with the mower, the quality seems to be good. I cannot compare to other companies because I haven't used them. I bought this one due to it's 20 inch width. I do not use the grass catcher as I want the clippings to fertilize the lawn. If you are reading this, you obviously are contemplating a reel mower, I say go for it. Not using gas and the quietness of it is worth it. You will even get some exercise.

Customer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good mower
The mower works great, but adjusting the blade before the first use was a pain. The instructions are not accurate, and it's my fist time owning a lawn mower so it took some trial and error to figure it out. Having a grass catcher is convenient, however, I don't plan to use it much as it's better to return the clippings to the lawn and it slows the mowing down considerably having to stop frequently to empty the clippings. It might be better if the grass catcher held a larger volume of grass. Overall it'a basically like every other reel mower I've used. It's great for the environment, cuts the grass well, is quiet and is a great way to get some excercise. For the price, however, it's now practically possible to get battery powered mower....

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good for a reel mower BUT ...
This Gilmour Reel Mower would be ideal for someone with a small lawn that is even and non-sloping. I gave it 4 stars because I think that for a reel mower it's a very good one. But any reel mower is probably not the best option for a large or sloping yard.

(1) TRIMMING: Anything that's taller than about 5" does not get cut so you have to trim what's left standing after you mow. I have the level set to `5' (`6' is the maximum) which helps get some of the higher stuff but it still leaves a lot.

(2) TIME: We have a large yard. It takes me about 6 to 8 hours to mow the whole yard plus an extra 4 or more hours to trim the tall stuff that's left sticking up, so 10 to 12 hours. If we had a gas mower, it would probably take about 3 to 5 hours because there would be very little trimming or going over the same spot several times with the mower to get the taller grass.

(3) STALLING: The mower does not work well if you have a lot of uneven spots on the lawn because it needs the friction of the lawn against the wheels to move the blades. So, if you hit a bump or a dip and the wheels can't grip then you won't be cutting anything. If you hit a stick or a thick weed stem then the blades will stop and you'll have to pull it out.

(4) EFFORT: Mowing with a reel mower takes a lot of effort. It's pretty hot where I live. It cooled off to 82 degrees yesterday and I spent 50 minutes mowing with the Gilmour. When I finally quit, my face was red, I had sweat stinging my eyes and I felt like I ran a half-marathon. My arms are bulking up from mowing and I'm getting some good aerobic exercise, though.

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
