    Amazon.com Item Description:

The VPX1212X is powered by Black & Decker's powerful VPX Battery System.

Despite its considerable power, the VPX1212X is small enough to fit easily in your hand, and it stores almost anywhere.

This model comes complete with a carrying case that holds the drill and the included 20-piece accessory kit.
Introducing the VPX Lithium-Ion Battery System
Black & Decker's advanced, powerful VPX system guarantees the convenience of a rechargeable battery with maximum versatility. At the center of the VPX system is the 7-volt high-energy VPX rechargeable battery, which features breakthrough lithium-ion technology to generate more energy in a smaller package. The end result is a battery that's super-compact and 60-percent lighter than Black & Decker's Ni-Cad power tool batteries. And the VPX holds a charge longer, too -- so it's ready to work whenever you are.

With its versatile design and Black & Decker exclusive technology, a VPX battery is interchangeable with all the products in Black & Decker's growing VPX line. Swap out one battery for the flashlight, inflator, screwdriver, USB power source, cut saw, or 7-volt drill driver; or double the juice with two batteries to operate the 14-volt drill driver or the hand vac. And of course, every VXP battery and compatible product features the rugged, dependable construction you expect from an industry leader in home power tools.

About the 14-volt VPX cordless drill/driver
The new VPX1212X drill/driver from Black & Decker offers powerful drilling in a convenient, compact design. This rugged tool is just one more great offering from the revolutionary new VPX interchangeable lithium-ion battery system. Once you get started with the VPX system, it's easy to expand with other power tools, household devices, and electronic products like this one.

High voltage drills are typically heavy and often too bulky for tight spaces, but the VPX1212X has a compact design that gets the job done even in the most cramped working areas. And this drill may be pocket-sized, but don't underestimate it. This model delivers up to 80-percent more torque than Black & Decker's compact 14.4-volt drills, even though it's 15-percent smaller.

The VPX1212X offers two speeds: high-speed for fastening and assembly jobs, and low-speed for drilling and higher torque applications. It also features a 24-position clutch that lets you customize your torque settings, a variable-speed trigger for better control, and a metal single sleeve chuck with a knurled pattern to help improve gripping. The VPX1212X is powered by two 7-volt VPX batteries (included) that are interchangeable with other VPX products. It comes complete with a dual port charger and a sleek, form-fitting case -- plus a 20-piece accessory set.

    Key Technical Specs:
    • 14-volt operation with 2 VPX batteries (included)
    • 24-position clutch
    • Variable speed trigger
    • 2-speed transmission
    • 20-piece accessory kit included

    Buyer Reviews
Average Buyer Rating: out of 5 stars

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very satisfied with this drill/driver
I loaned my cordless to a neighbor and he lost it. Since he couldn't find the same brand locally (Hitachi) he bought me the Black and Decker VPX1212 to replace it. I'm satisfied. I spent the weekend building a foundation for a greenhouse and put up some fencing around the new building. The drill worked well for driving screws. I even joined 4x4's with 5 1/2" screws without pre-drilling. This baby has serious torque, as much as my middle aged wrists can handle.

The drill seems well made and well balanced. It is reasonably light too, for the amount of driving power it offers. The only down side is how fast I use up batteries. I went through the first pair, put them in the charger and used up the second set before the first was fully charged. The two sets were what the neighbor got to replace my old drill. I'll pick up another set.

On the plus side, a new pair is only $26 at WalMart. That's the cheapest I've seen for any cordless drill batteries.

Oh, my wife thinks the three color design looks like it was done by Nike. She has a point; though I like the small amount of orange, enough to find the drill easily but not obnoxious.

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Nifty
Using the drill for allaround tasks about the house. I like the auto (keyless) chuck and the clutch. There is a funny noise when the drill starts to spin up, which I actually got to like as I have some feedback when the drill starts to go as you keep squeezing the trigger.

One thing I dislike very much are the lights on the charger (I know this is a drill review but the charger is part of the "family.") The lights (LEDs) are bright red and they flash during charging as if something bad is about to happen. Okay, so the Chinese like red but that's not the case here. Oh, don't do any flashing -- just go from steady yellow to green.

In the future I would like to see some form of optical leveling assistant that would tell me the drill is in perfect vertical or horiz. position.

Customer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good drill --- good price
This new technology drill has plenty of power at a reasonable price. I've only used it a couple of times so far, but I'm very pleased with it, and with the service I received from Amazon.

Customer Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Is this a serious tool?
I bought the VPX1212x and ran it through its paces. The drill felt like it had a little more torque than the drill it is replacing, my trusty Makita 12v NiMH. Run time was reasonable, able to drive as many 3" screws as my Makita - about 90.

I was rather alarmed by a visible spark when I released the trigger in low gear. It is all contained in the unit, and all drills spark, but this seemed out of the ordinary. The performance was even more questionable when I ran the drill in high gear - the drill would stop with an unpleasantly loud metallic clank as the drill stopped quickly. All this has me questioning the designed life-span of the tool, and I do not perceive that this unit is intended for more than infrequent use for lighter-duty jobs.

Another problem I have with the drill is the charger. I depleted the batteries, allowed them to cool (they were just a little warm), placed them in the charger, and they have not yet recharged some 4 hours later. With my Makita I can recharge one battery pack with using the other battery (1-hour charger), and unless I am building a deck I have never out-paced the charger. The 1212X comes with one set of batteries, so there is no using the drill when the batteries charge. By the time one would buy a second set of batteries to increase the drill's run time one might be better off with a stronger tool.

Bottom line, I can see this drill being used effectively for light duty applications but it does not appear to be a workhorse.

    Jim
