Editorial Product Review:Amazon.com Item Description:Black and Decker's Grass Hog cordless string trimmer and edger offers the convenience of cordless power without the mess of fuel. Requiring virtually no tune-ups and no fussing with gasoline and oil mixtures, the Grass Hog gives you quiet, reliable, maintenance-free power at the flip of a switch. True, battery power doesn't measure up to the strength of a gas engine, but maybe you don't need all that power (and pollution) anyway.
This trimmer takes just a few minutes to put together, and its durable construction -- backed by Black and Decker's 2-year warranty -- is immediately obvious. With a 12-inch cutting path -- the largest of any battery-powered trimmer -- the Grass Hog works quickly. It is limited to light-duty cutting of grass and foliage but can handle most homeowners' needs for weekend weed-whacking. The straight-shaft design lets you easily reach under decks and stairs, and the height-adjustable handles offer a comfortable grip. The Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) system releases the trimmer's .065-diameter line as it's needed using centrifugal, with no tapping or bumping of the spool head required. The edger feature is easy to engage; with just a button, the Groom'N'Edge rotates 180-degrees for an easy conversion from trimming to edging and back again. The edger does a decent job of cleaning up around paving stones and concrete, although it's not quite as powerful as gas and corded electric models when cutting extensive edges along walkways and driveways. The 12-volt battery is powerful enough to provide a minimum of 6800 rpm, allows instant start-up, gives plenty of run-time per charge, and will recharge overnight.
Weighing over 10 pounds, the Grass Hog may be a bit heavy for some users, but for small, light-duty jobs, most homeowners should find it to be quite manageable. As with all power equipment, trimmers must be handled with caution. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating this serious piece of equipment.

Piece of Sheiss
Uh, this thing didn't last but two weeks when I had to tape together the bottom. Just normal use. The cheap price obviously was related to a run of these through the factory where the injection mold malfunctioned. QC picked it up and rather than take the tax loss they shipped them with the full knowledge that they would fail under normal use.

Black & Decker cordless Trimmer
It's great but it needs an 18 Volt battery instead of 12 Volts; however, it works for me and I would encourage anyone to buy it. The only thing I dislike about this trimmer is the continue replacement of the trimmer line. Have to rewind the trimmer spool too often(line breaks off).

I have now loved it for 7 summers..
I bought this trimmer in the spring of 2002..
I have used it now for a total of 7 summers..
It does what I ask it to.. to trim the grass that the lawn mower does not.
That includes around the house, around 3 decks, around a couple of
flower beds, around the motor home, the mail box, some bushes, and around some trees..
Indeed, the battery is near dead when I'm done. But by then it has
done what I wanted it to do.

Very satisfied
I live on a .4 acre lot and was sick of wrestling with cords, plus I couldn't see spending $200+ on a gas-powered trimmer, so I bought this one and couldn't be happier. I can do my entire lot and then 1/2 of the lot again (a week later) on a single charge. Mine came with two batteries, so battery power is not an issue. It changes to edging mode in a flash and cuts well. My only gripe is that the 12" cutting zone is a bit small, but I love this trimmer. I highly recommend it.
